“I joined the Nurse Practitioner (NP) Residency Program at Fraser Health in March 2020 as a nurse practitioner trained in the United States, and planning to transition back to British Columbia. The residency afforded me the opportunity to gain a variety of experiences in clinics that I may not have worked in otherwise, including the Eagle Ridge Patient Assessment and Transition to Home (PATH) unit, the Embrace Clinic for clients who have experienced interpersonal violence, Indigenous Health, transgender health, and urgent care and primary care.
I learned from a variety of providers and experienced different areas of our health system and within the organization. Because of this, I feel that I am more equipped to refer my patients to certain specialty clinics, as I now have a better understanding of what they provide.
The residency also provided built-in education or didactic hours, which allowed me to complete my online education at my own pace. These courses rounded out my experience and filled some education gaps I had from not doing my education in British Columbia.
I would highly recommend this program to any NP who is considering applying.”
