Meet Paloma, a registered nurse who recently relocated from Chile to join our emergency team at Royal Columbian Hospital (RCH) in New Westminster.

“We moved because we were looking for a place where my family could thrive, and Canada was the place. We choose British Columbia (B.C) because there were excellent opportunities for us, it has stunning views and is a place where we knew the weather is mild!

I live in New Westminster and RCH is the closest hospital to my home. I also imagined myself working in a big hospital and the fact it’s a Trauma Level One centre was very exciting to me!

I felt very welcomed and supported when I arrived in Canada. Everyone was super friendly and willing to help at any moment. I first attended one of Fraser Health’s virtual events for registered nurses in emergency and critical care and from there, the recruiter connected me in with my current manager. Everything went smoothly from that point. I received support from the onboarding team, clinical nurse educators (CNEs) throughout the transition to the Canadian health care system. Fraser Health also connected me with Health Match BC who helped me with my provincial nomination and permanent residency.

For everyone who wants to work here in B.C., I would highly recommend connecting with Fraser Health and Health Match BC who do their best to make the transition smooth for you. Be prepared to have interviews and enjoy B.C.!

What I love most about my job in Emergency is that every day is different. I love learning new things and I love the teamwork in my unit. Everyone is doing their best to provide excellent patient care even when challenges arise. The team is very approachable, skilled and you will always find support not only from the CNEs, Patient Care Coordinators (PCCs), your colleagues and staff. It’s a good place to work!”
