As a clinic nurse mentor (CNM), I support both the surgical and medicine units at Ridge Meadows Hospital. In my role, I work elbow-to-elbow with new graduate nurses, international educated nurses (IENs) and nurses transitioning from other practice areas. I help nurses work through challenges and use my experiences and resources to help them navigate new situations.
My goal and what I love most about being a CNM is making a positive impact and supporting nurses to build their confidence and become more competent in their practice. I do my best to help nurses discuss patient needs, concerns and organize their workloads. I also hold space for educational huddles, one-on-one coaching and go over any concerns they might be experiencing. I love how I get to educate and share my experiences with new grads, IENs and learners. This role has given me the autonomy to build my own routine and style of coaching that has made me feel proud to be a CNM.
I get to work with two different units, each with unique perspectives and a diverse group of people. I like how excited the team is when I’m at work and knowing I’m there ready to help them navigate their workloads. I feel blessed to work with the clinical nurse educators and patient care coordinators within my units who keep an open line of communication [with me] and trust that I’m here to help them with their teams.
Working as a CNM has helped me to build my confidence and develop my teaching and leadership skills. I have the opportunity to work with leadership and nurses to help support the floor. This role has also helped me build a routine in effectively supporting the nurses and units.
Within our CNM team, I like how we have a community to support one another and ask questions. I feel that it is very easy to reach out to my leaders and have support when I need it.
I would highly recommend the CNM role if you are passionate about teaching, coaching and supporting nurses. This role offers a lot of autonomy and unique opportunities to support and educate nurses from all areas of practice.
I work in the Fraser Health region because I love being able to work and support the community I grew up in. I was born and raised here and chose to live in the nearby city of Surrey because it’s a fast and growing city that has a lot to offer. Maple Ridge is also a nice and quiet community. Outside of work, I enjoy spending quality time with friends and family or taking care of my physical health by playing basketball, spending time at the golf course and going to the gym.
