Working on the Family Birthing Unit (FBU) for over 12 years as a perinatal registered nurse at Surrey Memorial Hospital has allowed me to work in different areas of the unit and grow as a nurse. I guide patients into their labor and delivery, help new mothers care for their newborns, work on care plans for high-risk patients or hold a patient’s hand when they are admitted as an antepartum patient. These are the moments when my passion for the unit flourishes.
What I love the most about my career is being able to be a part of a precious moment for our families. Guiding and educating patients and their families as they transition into parenthood provides me with a sense of accomplishment as a nurse. Working in the FBU, you can follow your dreams of becoming a perinatal nurse and work with a collaborative multidisciplinary team.
I am proud to work with an amazing team. Each team member partakes in quality improvement by expanding their education provided by Fraser Health. I am driven to provide the best care to our patients even when the unit is busy. Each shift is an achievement, and whether we saw each other or not during the shift, we celebrate each shift.
I have also been able to complete my master’s degree while being employed with Fraser Health. This achievement has allowed me to bring forward my acquired knowledge when educating patients and staff.
Our leadership team leads huddles once a shift to have the opportunity to reflect on our day. These few minutes every shift allows the unit to reconnect so we can continue to provide the best care to our patients. Further, our leadership team constantly drives us to ensure we maintain our own self-care. When we prioritize and maintain our well-being, we are able to provide the best care to our patients.
Outside of work I love spending time with my family, enjoy listening to music, cooking, being outdoors and working out.
