Burnaby Hospital Redevelopment Project
Improving access to quality care
Burnaby Hospital redevelopment is a multi-year project occurring in two phases that will transform almost every area of the hospital. It will see two new patient care towers, a new cancer centre and expansion and renovations to existing buildings on campus.
Redevelopment project highlights
- Larger emergency department
- Additional operating rooms and procedure rooms
- Mental health and substance use unit with a secured outdoor patio to enhance healing
- Maternity unit that will provide single-room maternity care, where labour, delivery and recovery happen in the same room
- Neonatal intensive care unit with single rooms for more privacy and comfort
- Medical unit with negative pressure rooms and outbreak zones to enhance infection control

Interior design to promote healing
The new facility will promote healing and well-being through interior design inspired by Burnaby’s natural surroundings. Drawing from the flowing waters of the Fraser River and Burrard Inlet, lush rainforests, tranquil lakes and the expansive views from Burnaby Mountain, the space will bring the calming influence of nature indoors.
Research shows interior design that brings the natural world into health care settings can positively impact patient recovery.
