Hi, I’m Felicia and I am an inventory management technician. I manage drug inventory at two of Providence Health Care’s acute sites (St. Paul’s Hospital and Mount St. Joseph Hospital).

My favourite part of the workday and one of the most rewarding aspects of my role is identifying opportunities to reduce costs and improve efficiency in drug procurement. Even if it’s as small as saving a few dollars on courier expenses or preventing unnecessary drug wastage, I take pride in contributing to operational improvements that support the pharmacy’s overall effectiveness.

I start my day by placing unit-dose drug orders and reviewing staff-submitted drug shortlists to verify inventory accuracy and confirm whether requested items are already on order. I then carry out other tasks, including but not limited to:

  • Charging drugs stored on the patient units
  • Returning reusable containers to vendors
  • Conducting cycle counts for high-use and high-cost medications
  • Organizing inventory shelves to accommodate incoming stock or remove items no longer needed
  • Processing expired drugs and returning them to the manufacturers
  • Ordering pharmacy supplies from the hospital stores department

I also monitor the daily drug shortage report and escalate supply concerns to pharmacy supervisors as needed. Throughout the day, I respond to various inquiries; some from the Lower Mainland pharmacy buyers and supervisors regarding drug sharing between hospital sites and usage data.

Effective written communication is essential in my role, especially when collaborating closely with offsite teams. Email correspondence is a key part of daily operations, and I continuously work to strengthen my skills to ensure clarity and efficiency in all my interactions.

My team fosters a collaborative environment, which is especially important given the fast-paced nature of our work. We actively support one another by sharing updates, troubleshooting issues together, and ensuring smooth coordination across tasks. Whether it’s resolving inventory discrepancies, assisting with urgent drug orders or responding to drug recalls, the team’s responsiveness and willingness to help contribute significantly to our overall efficiency.
