“I had the pleasure of meeting a clinical nurse mentor who was recently hired to support newly graduated nurses,” shares Fairouz.

Fairouz is a registered nurse (RN) working as an education consultant and has recently returned to her nursing practice in the emergency department at Delta Hospital.

“It was incredible to see how this [mentorship] program has come to fruition and hear how beneficial new grads are finding it. Having someone right at the bedside mentoring, guiding through skills and tasks and being a sounding board for their questions makes such a meaningful difference during their transition into practice.

I took a moment to chat with Jack, who recently transitioned into the clinical nurse mentor role. He shared how much he enjoys passing on his knowledge, tips and tricks to new hires, new grads and internationally educated nurses. Building trust and familiarity with staff takes time but he expressed how rewarding it has been to support others in their learning journeys.

Witnessing firsthand the positive impact of this program and seeing Jack thrive in his role reminded me why mentorship is so vital in health care. It’s all about creating a supportive environment where everyone can grow, succeed and ultimately deliver the best care possible.

To all the mentors out there—thank you for your dedication to lifting others up as they navigate their paths in health care!

Now that I’m back working in emergency, the fast-paced and dynamic environment reminds me what first drew me to this profession. I recently had the opportunity to see the work we had been working on being implemented in real time.

In this picture, you’ll see the two amazing new grads I worked with alongside their clinical nurse mentor!
