Meet Karla, manager of clinical operations for the Community Substance Use programs. She leads a dedicated team of clinicians working to support clients who have mental health and substance use challenges.
“I love my role as a manager, supporting my team in creating meaningful change that improves client outcomes and reduces stigma around mental health and substance use care.
Throughout my 23-year career at Fraser Health, I’ve been a casual on several different teams, moving towards part-time and eventually full-time as my children grew older. My directors have been very supportive and I can easily connect with them in addition to my frequent one-to-one check-ins.
I’ve been fortunate to have had the opportunity to lead regional teams within the mental health and substance use services. When services are regionalized, it ensures that clients receive the same level of care, regardless of postal code and helps increase access to areas of our health region that may not have previously had service. I would encourage any social worker to join Fraser Health and to consider growing into a managerial or leadership role. As a manager, you have the opportunity to impact change on a different way.
I work in Surrey as many of the substance use-specific services are located in this area. The parking here is good and having the SkyTrain as an option is convenient—I really appreciate the accessibility. Living in the Tri-Cities, I’m close to the SkyTrain as well where I can easily get to my office in Surrey or head downtown without needing to drive.
Living and working in the Fraser Health region, I love the mountain views and the peacefulness of the valley.  On my down time, I enjoy walking or running with friends in the park near my home, cooking or spending time with family.
Fraser Health is the heart of health care for over two million people in 20 diverse communities from Burnaby to Boston Bar on the traditional, ancestral and unceded lands of the Coast Salish and Nlaka’pamux Nations and is home to 32 First Nations within the Fraser Salish region.
Our hospital and community-based services are delivered by a team of 48,000+ staff, medical staff and volunteers dedicated to serving our patients, families and communities.
