As an occupational therapist, I decided to move from California to British Columbia (B.C.) because I was interested in learning about Canada’s publicly funded health system and the diverse practice settings.
Throughout my transition to Canada, everyone has been very welcoming and helpful. I was first connected with a recruiter from Fraser Health who helped me with the immigration process and was offered relocation assistance to cover some of my moving expenses. Once I arrived, I was set up with my work permit. I’m very happy to have relocated from the United States and hope to become a permanent resident!
I chose the Fraser Health region because I love being able to see the beautiful coastal mountains. Since moving, I’ve really grown to love living and working in B.C.
I’ve been working in Community Home Health for over six months now and was previously in acute care. Going from acute care to community is very different, and I’ve really been enjoying it and have been able to provide great care to all my clients. I love being able to visit different homes and connecting with my clients on a personal level. Community Home Health has a very open and welcoming work culture. If there’s something that I don’t understand or where I require more information, my colleagues are always there to help.
For anyone considering relocating to Canada to work in health care, I would suggest visiting and exploring around the area before moving. Everyone working in health care has been super helpful and friendly, and there are many opportunities and diverse areas of practice that you can explore to find the right fit for you. Although wages to provide care are different, the cost outweighs the benefits we receive.
