PYXIS and Omnicell Automated Dispensing Cabinets (ADCs) access

Automated Dispensing Cabinets (ADCs) secure 90% of the medications in a patient care area. Only approved students and instructors completing clinical practicums may have access to remove medications from ADCs.

Clinical/placement coordinators or instructors:

  • Please forward completed User Access Request Form to the assigned site.
  • Training is attended at the assigned site, contact the individual site Clinical Nurse Advisor (CNA) if any trouble accessing a class.
  • Refer to Pyxis Student Access and Training to determine if a request form is necessary as students assigned to some units may be exempt from Pyxis access.

Training

Note: Training is different at ALL sites. Eligible students and new instructors must attend training at the assigned site (e.g. assigned at RCH, attend at RCH) or affiliate site (e.g. if assigned to MMH, attend at ARH).

  • Clinical Instructors and Preceptorship Students who have never been used Pyxis or Omnicell must register for Pyxis or Omnicell basic training through Learning Hub and attend prior to the start of the rotation at the destination site.
  • Specialty education and advanced pathway students:
    • Placements 6 weeks or less are required to complete the appropriate online module (see links below).
    • Placements 7 weeks or greater are advised to attend a basic training session at the assigned site (see links above).
      • Exceptions may be made on a case-by-case basis. Please contact the site CNA(s) for further details.
  • Instructor lead clinical group students:
    Must complete the appropriate module prior to their first clinical group rotation (see links below).
