Placement orientation
Required orientation and training for students, faculty supervisors and instructors.
All students and faculty must complete and submit the Student Practice Education Core Orientation (SPECO) Curriculum Checklist to your educational institution. Read the steps below for further information on provincial and Fraser Health requirements.
Before a student or on-site faculty begins a clinical placement, there are a few requirements to be completed to help ensure the safety and well-being of students, staff and our patients. Some requirements are shared across the province, and some are specific to the health organization, site or care area of the placement, as listed below.
Provincial requirements
These apply to students of all disciplines attending a clinical placement at any health care setting. The details are found in the Provincial Practice Education Guidelines listed.
The following are administered and tracked by your post secondary institution:
- Immunizations
- Influenza vaccination
- Immunizations (according to the Communicable disease prevention practice education guideline)
- Criminal record check
- Fit-testing (according to the Respiratory protection practice education guideline)
- CPR as required by your program
These mandatory SPECO eModules are available online via LearningHub and must be completed before any practice education experience begins. Your educational institution must maintain your records. This education is mandatory for all post secondary schools in the province of British Columbia.
For help creating a LearningHub account:
Provincial Violence Prevention eModules are included in SPECO.
For students in high risk areas, post secondary institutions will provide an in-class Provincial Violence Prevention Course (PVPC) to their students.
See Violence Prevention Training for Students on Placement at B.C. Health Authorities for risk categories and in-class PVPC requirements for students.
Visit the privacy and confidentiality policy for information.
Once the above mandatory steps are completed, please fill out the SPECO checklist and submit to your post secondary institution.
