Consultant Focus: Staff Engagement, Leadership Development and Strategic Change Management

Are you passionate about motivating and engaging others to take pro-environmental action? Are you a strategic thinker who can identify levers for change in complex organizations and systems? The Lower Mainland Facilities Management Energy and Environmental Sustainability Team is seeking a Sustainability Consultant to manage their flagship employee engagement program, and advise on organizational change management for their portfolio of projects and programs.

As a Sustainability Consultant specializing in staff engagement, you are a key member of the health care sector focused Energy and Environmental Sustainability team within the Lower Mainland Facilities Management department. This team works to improve the environmental performance of healthcare operations across the Lower Mainland.

Why is this role important?

Your work will be focused on delivering programing through volunteer engagement, strategic communications and change-management initiatives that support systems and culture change in the areas of Smart Energy & Water, Zero Waste & Toxicity, Regenerative Design (including Climate Resilience and Adaptation), and Active & Clean Transportation.

You will report to the Environmental Sustainability Manager and will work in close collaboration with a small and diverse team. You can find out more information on the strategic framework of this dynamic team on the BC GreenCare website.

Your key responsibilities include the following

  • Engagement and Outreach Planning and Implementation: Work with the Energy and Environmental Sustainability team and health care staff to develop and manage staff engagement  programs and related communication strategies. This includes staff engagement programs and strategies related to Culture Change, Zero Waste & Toxicity, Smart Energy & Water, Active& Clean Transportation, and Climate Resilience and Adaptation.
  • Create, Deliver, and Maintain Education, Training, and Related Tools: Provide regular training, mentoring and leadership development for health care staff seeking to make their work space more energy and environmentally sustainable.
  • Establish Communication Strategy: Collaborate on and support the implementation of the Energy and Environmental Sustainability Team’s communications strategy.
  • Monitor and Report on Performance: Establish and report on staff engagement and change related specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and timely key performance indicators and related targets.
  • Cultivate Newsletter Content and Produce Periodic Newsletters:  Develop timely and compelling sustainability stories and updates to feature on the health care organizations eNews and the GreenCare Community (web) platform.  These stories highlight sustainability engagement programming impacts and good news. Capture success stories from program participants and stakeholders and help promote through internal communications channels. 
  • Establishing Partnerships: Engage and partner with other health authority departments to support the integration of environmental sustainability initiatives into systems and day-to-day operations.
  • Staying Abreast of Best Practices, Trends and Innovation Watch: Track and integrate emerging trends in environmental communications and engagement to ensure the Energy and Environmental Sustainability Team’s approach remains current and relevant.
  • Ensure Photographic and Video Capture of Impactful Stories: Coordinate photography and videography to promote awareness of sustainability across the health care organizations
  • Submit for Awards: Identify relevant and professionally recognized award opportunities to recognize and promote successful projects and work within staff engagement in health care

Are you motivated to join us? We will be looking for you to have:

  • A bachelor degree in the fields of Adult Education, Communications, Environmental Management, or related disciplines. Preference will be given to those who have a graduate degree.
  • Certificate or training in Change Management.
  • Three to five years’ experience working in a related field, with preference given for those with experience in large complex organizations. An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be acceptable.
  • A high degree of comfort developing and facilitating adult education or training programs. This includes experience coaching, mentoring and engaging volunteers or other groups.
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills, including effective public speaking / presentations skills.
  • Experience working with communications professionals including designers and copy writers.
  • Knowledge of and experience with theories of pro-environmental communications and change management.
  • Ability to work independently to manage multiple projects at once by demonstrating effective resource and project planning, decision making and results delivery.
  • Ability to manage a budget and meet deadlines.
  • Strong MS Office skills (Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, Word)

Travel to health authority sites throughout the Lower Mainland may be required; thus a Valid Driver’s license will be required. 

This Regular Full-time opportunity will be located either at 520 West 6th Avenue in Vancouver or Central City in Surrey.
